Indoor Air Quality & Your Health
Health effects from indoor air pollutants can be experienced immediately or sometimes up to years after exposure. Immediate effects are more likely to be easily treatable if the source of the problem can be identified and removed from the environment. Some of the immediate effects are:
Headaches
Fatigue
Nausea
Dizziness
Respiratory symptoms
Skin Irritations
Long term exposure to poor indoor air quality has been linked to serious illnesses such as
asthma and other respiratory conditions.
How people react to indoor air pollutants depends on different variables. Age, genetics and health conditions are the most important factors. Individual sensitivity to pollutants or chemicals can be experienced by people of all ages.
Many times the effects are similar to the common cold or flu. This makes it difficult to determine if the symptoms could be the result of exposure to indoor air pollution. It is important to pay attention to the time and place the symptoms are experienced. Symptoms that go away when the person leaves the home or building and comes back when the person returns, are most likely due to poor indoor air quality in the building. Every effort should be made to identify and correct the condition or conditions that cause poor indoor air quality.
Indoor Air Quality at Work
Poor indoor air quality is not just limited to homes. There are a number illnesses, like Legionnaires' disease, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever, that are considered to be directly related to poor indoor air quality in certain buildings.
Employees may have one or more symptoms such as: dry or burning mucous membranes in the nose, eyes, and throat; sneezing; stuffy or runny nose; fatigue or lethargy; headache; dizziness; nausea; irritability and forgetfulness.
Up to 30 percent of new or remodeled commercial buildings have received complaints by workers that may be related to poor indoor air quality. Sometimes the complaints come from many workers in a single building, or only from one or two employees.
If you suspect there is an indoor air quality problem at work, talk with the other employees and your supervisor. Request that the company order an indoor air quality inspection today.
